For decades, Ilizarov’s distraction osteogenesis using external fixation was the best option for limb lengthening. Recent advances have resulted in less invasive alternatives. The use of an adjustable intramedullary nail eliminates the need for an external fixation frame or external fixator. External fixation frames are commonly associated with pin site infections and other complications.1
We have developed the PRECICE Intramedullary Limb Lengthening System, which is an adjustable intramedullary nail incorporating remote control technology using magnets. The PRECICE system is designed to lengthen the femur or tibia with precision and control.
The key to the technology is the non-invasive magnetic interaction between the PRECICE implant and the PRECICE External Remote Controller (ERC), a portable, hand-held unit that lengthens the PRECICE implant.
The PRECICE ERC is programmed in order to accurately lengthen the femur or tibia based upon the surgeon’s prescription. Weekly clinical and radiographic evaluations are performed to confirm lengthening and new bone formation. The rate of lenthening may be modified by the surgeon to match the quality of new bone formation.
Careful pre-operative evaluation and planning, proper surgical technique, and extended post-operative care by experienced surgeons are essential for the success of any limb lengthening procedure.
The PRECICE Intramedullary Limb Lengthening System is available for pre-operative templating using the TraumaCad® digital imaging software system.
