Limb length discrepancy (LLD) does not cause a problem for everyone, but when it keeps you or someone you know from living life to the fullest, it’s difficult to stay positive. Don’t give up! It’s important to remember that you’re not alone. People all over the world struggle with limb length discrepancy, and they’ve come together to build a community of support and understanding.

Hear from real leg length discrepancy (LLD) patients about their experiences with the PRECICE® internal lengthening device and see examples from their leg lengthening surgery before and after. Having undergone leg lengthening surgery, they know first-hand what you’re going through right now, and they’ve volunteered to share their stories.

Tobin’s Story

Always the athlete, Tobin Niblett injured his leg hopping a park bench when he was in the sixth grade. It wasn’t until a few years later that he noticed he had one leg shorter than the other. The fracture never healed properly, causing a leg length discrepancy of 2 to 3 inches.

For Tobin, recovery time was key to his treatment plan. As a professional golfer on the junior golf circuit, he couldn’t afford to be off his feet for very long. With the PRECICE internal lengthening device, Tobin spent minimal time in the hospital post-surgery and was able to get back to the golf course in just a few months.

Renee’s Story

Only a few days after she brought Renee home from the hospital, Erica Voss noticed a small dimple on her daughter’s leg. Born without a fibular bone, Renee Cloutier-Voss has spent much of her life in and out of surgeons’ offices.

Her relatively large leg length discrepancy (about 3 inches) meant Renee’s family was faced with the decision to amputate or begin the lengthy, involved process of leg lengthening surgery. With the support of her family, Renee underwent surgery after surgery, until finally, they found the right treatment plan to help her reach her height.

Mark’s Story

With a cancer diagnosis, one usually expects to undergo surgery, chemotherapy, or some combination of the two. For Mark DuMoulin, the surgery to remove his tumor had an added complication; it took a large portion of his femur bone (21cm) with it.

Mark’s surgeons reconstructed his femur bone using pieces of his healthy bone to fill in the defect, but Mark still had a leg length discrepancy of about 2 inches. Using the PRECICE internal lengthening device, Mark was able to regrow his own bone and reach his height.

Lauryn’s Story

Sports injuries aren’t uncommon in children, but when Lauryn Kapiloff crashed into a tree during a family ski trip, she didn’t just break her leg. The impact had caused a growth plate fracture, which would eventually lead to a 2.5 inches leg length discrepancy.

When Lauryn’s surgeon recommended the PRECICE internal lengthening device, her mother knew it was the right option. Tracy wanted a solution that would allow her daughter to do the things she loved, and with PRECICE, “She could do everything. We swam in a pool, we went and visited her friends at camp, we went to a baseball game, and you couldn’t tell anything was going on with her.”

The PRECICE Intramedullary Limb Lengthening (IMLL) System is composed of an implantable intramedullary nail, locking screws, reusable instruments, and a hand-held External Remote Controller (ERC). The PRECICE nail is a sterile single use device that is surgically implanted using the instruments and locking screws. The ERC is used daily after implantation to non-invasively lengthen or shorten the implant to a prescribed length. The PRECICE System is intended for limb lengthening of the femur and tibia. Contraindications include infection or pathologic conditions of bone such as osteopenia which would impair the ability to securely fix the device, metal allergies and sensitivities, patients whose distance from the surface of the treated limb to the intramedullary canal is greater than 51 mm for the 10.7 and 12.5 mm diameter implants or greater than 38 mm for the 8.5 mm diameter implant, patients with an irregular bone diameter that would prevent insertion of the PRECICE nail, patients in which the PRECICE nail would cross joint spaces or open epiphyseal growth plates, patients in which there is an obliterated medullary canal or other conditions that tend to retard healing such as blood supply limitations, peripheral vascular disease or evidence of inadequate vascularity, patients unwilling or incapable of following postoperative care instructions, patients weighing in excess of 114 Kg for the 10.7 and 12.5 mm diameter implants (models A-G, H, J, K, and U) or weighing in excess of 57 Kg for the 8.5 and 10.7 mm diameter implants models (A-G, H, J, K, U, N, M ,P, and Q). The implantable device is only to be used by a trained licensed physician. Please refer to the PRECICE IMLL System instructions for use for complete Important Safety Information. Caution: Federal law restricts this device to sale by or on the order of a physician.
